ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
Authorities at a new prisoner processing facility in Albuquerque can check the immigration status of every person arrested in New Mexico’s largest city, but Mayor Richard Berry denied any effort to shadow Arizona’s tough crackdown on illegal immigrants.
Berry said the new Prisoner Transport Center unveiled Thursday has nothing to do with immigration law and is aimed simply at keeping criminals off the city’s streets.
