Un-fucking-believable.

he's such a jerk. Well, I pretty much knew that after he was in that creationist fake-movie fake-documentary, which was I think the first time I knew what a nut he is. Feh.

I'd imagine Ben Stein's review of the satire "Bob Roberts"might go something like this : 'I was very impressed with this candidate and would like to subscribe to his newsletter, very much'

I always got tagged with the 'bad personality' tag back when I could work.

Usually because I said to my higher ups things like, "I'm not sure this is a good idea," or "The deadline can't be met as the amount of work to be done has been seriously underestimated and there's no room for mistakes."

Silly me. I just couldn't see that my bosses were one step away from God and He wasn't going to keep His job if he screwed up one more time.

And to think I liked this guy in Ferris Bueller. Fuck you, Ben.

For someone who knows the ways of business, he doesn't know the way of business. Layoffs are an entirely bureaucratic process. Companies have no idea of the people that get laid off, only sections, divisions, and payroll.

Oh, Ben.

Rarely have I encountered somebody whose opinions range from decent and humane to closed-minded condescending tripe so regularly.

I've worked with the laid off/unemployed.

Yes, Ben, there are slackers and fools, and if they're unprotected by unions, they are indeed the first that smaller businesses tend to look to unload. But as poster Bob Levin says, most larger businesses use a far less thoughtful metric and go for the straight math. And the straight math is a wide net that covers the personality disorders and the gracious hardworkers.

Your characterization would be far more apt when applied to those who carry resentment at being passed over in many affirmative action cases, but that's completely unrelated to those who have been mugged by the inexorable mathematics of business failure.

And dear, dear Ben -- you clearly have no appreciation for the effect that long-term unemployment has on good people. It's easy to sit in judgment from a distance, but for a person who has none of the traits you describe (and in my personal view, the majority of those affected lack these traits) their sense of value and worth gets chipped away as they realize, going from interview to interview, that the very thing which should ensure their hiring -- knowledge and experience -- make them a perceived liability for an employer looking for entry-level workers. (The unspoken rebop: Gee, you've got great experience, but we can't pay you what you're worth, and you'll leave as soon as you find someone who can, so we're going for someone who doesn't understand their own worth.)

And many laid-off folks have vast experience. (Translate -- too damned old.)

It takes a person of extraordinary inner strength with a solid support system and a financial cushion to weather any extended period of such rejection without their self-worth eroding daily. Sadly, such people exist in small numbers.

It's my fervent wish, Mr. Stein, that no one close to you faces such a long-term assault on their value as a human being; if it ever happens, I hope you have the strength of character to recognize the intolerance and idiocy of your position.

But as things stand, you're an anti-mensch. You should be ashamed.

I consider any job on that hiddeous show The Wonder Years to be worse than unemployment.

(I happen to like Ben Stein's book "How to Ruin Your Life".)
