Pinal County reopens investigation into deputy’s shooting
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is re-opening the investigation into the shooting of a deputy, allegedly by smugglers, after a published news account offered new opinions on the shooting.
Two physicians with expertise in analyzing gunshot wounds told the Phoenix New Times, in a story published last week, that Pinal County Deputy Louie Puroll appeared to have been shot at close range. That opinion differed from the judgement arrived at in investigations by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Even in the story, the opinions of medical examiners were not unanimous that the shot was fired from close range. But the sheriff’s office said it is re-opening the investigation “in an effort to maintain the transparency of our criminal investigation.”

Maybe in the interest of more transparency, somebody else should conduct the investigation.
