I beg to differ in the most strenuous manner. First let me point out Sullivan's headline: The Next Ron Paul? I suppose if you are a Ron Paul supporter, you won't agree with my opinion.

The article Sullivan links to, which is written by a Washington Times reporter, has this paragraph:

Like Ron Paul, whom he endorsed in 2008, Johnson is an unabashed libertarian-and, in some ways, a purer one (he’s pro-choice, pro-free trade, and pro-immigration). So, while he’s no culture warrior or foreign policy hawk—he opposed the war in Iraq and the troop surge in Afghanistan—he outflanks any Republican on fiscal issues, proposing an immediate, across-the-board 43 percent spending cut.

So Johnson is not a socon like Paul, but that still leaves the isolationism, which in my opinion is dangerous and naive, and the "end the Fed" nuttiness on the economy. I give Johnson credit for distancing himself from Rand Paul's remarks on the Civil Rights Act, but it's not nearly enough to qualify him as having "a good head on his shoulders".

One more thing. In 2008, Johnson voted for Chuck Baldwin for president.

OMGWTF?!?

It must just be a coincidence (it must!) that Gary Johnson is an avid AGW denier and that Matt Welch's sugar daddies, such as the Koch brothers, fund Reason to attack climatology.

Just a coincidence, I'm sure.

If he's in favor of free trade, he can't hardly be an isolationist by definition. =P

All good points. Anyways, I mostly wrote this up for his comments on Palin running. I think his seeing that Palin running would be terrible does show that he has sensibility that would be drastically preferable to the anti-intellectualism of today's Republican Party. The same applies to Kathleen Parker, who called for Palin to step down in 2008 and was bombarded with some of the most crass, hateful and racist mail in response.

Gary Johnson is a great guy. He did fantastically well for NM when he was governor.

I'm not up on my libertarian definitions, but I was referring to how he feels about war. I probably should have said "anti-interventionist", but I think that's too narrow for his position, which I think is in line with the elder Paul's in this area. No support for Israel, etc.
