I’m not one to invoke the death penalty for sex offenders, but when it’s put in these terms, in these numbers, I find it impossible to disagree with you, Locker.

I’m not a liberal but I oppose the death penalty for crimes other than murder, espionage, or treason.

It’s a practical question. These guys currently have an incentive to stop short of murder. Dead witnesses testify to nothing. If the crime carries the death penalty anyhow, why not at least minimize the chances of being convicted?

Kidnapping in which the victim is recovered alive does not carry the death penalty for this very reason. Even the very wicked calculate their chances and reckon the odds. As things stand, escalating to murder is simply bad business. And that’s the way it ought to remain.

You make a very good point here. Most of us have such an instinctual, visceral reaction to atrocities like this that it is sometimes hard to immediately recognize the unintended consequences of what our “gut” tells us should be done.

I’m not sure how your logic applies to the article/discussion. Pimps will kill their child prostitutes before…. before what? Before they turn 18? I’m not sure I get your point?

My opinion is that the death penalty is more of a deterrent to a crime being committed than it is an encouragement to kill someone they wouldn’t have normally killed because they are afraid of the death penalty. Admittedly an opinion.

Additionally my opinion is I don’t want to pay for some sick child molesting fuck to live for the next 50 years and get better food, medical treatment and shelter than a large portion of our upstanding citizenry. You do NOT get rehabilitated from that shit all they can try to do is contain it.

re: #4 Locker

I’ve heard the same argument used against the poorly written “Three Strikes” law here in CA.

The point being that the legal punishment could not get any worse for the criminal whether or not they murder the victim, so they gain a net plus by killing a victim that might otherwise be left alive to testify against them.

For instance, with regard to the Three Strikes law, a person who has already been convicted of two felonies, and is in the process of robbing someone at gunpoint, if caught will get life in prison whether or not they kill their victim. This gives the criminal greater incentive to murder their victim, thus eliminating a key witness against them, rather than simply rob the victim and leave it at that.
