Turkish Offiicals Claim Wikileaks Document Dump Israel’s Doing
If you were wondering when someone would get around to blaming Israel on the Wikileaks document drop, you didn’t have to wait that long. Turkish officials working in Prime Minister Erdogan made the claims:
That’s on the heels of Prime Minister Erdogan being embarrassed/upset by State Department cables saying that he had Swiss bank accounts and surrounds himself with fawning advisors. He’s since called the leaked documents gossip. The Israeli government initiated the massive WikiLeaks disclosure this week in the aims of pushing Turkey into a corner, a senior official in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan charged Wednesday.
“We should look at the countries that are satisfied by the leak, and Israel is very satisfied,” said Huseyin Celik, the deputy chairman of Turkey’s ruling party.
Celik, who also serves as the party’s spokesman, said in a press conference that Turkey started to suspect that “the leak’s main objective was to weaken the Turkish government.”
Israeli relations with Turkey have gone in the crapper since Turkey backed the Gaza flotilla and Israeli commandos stormed one of the ships and ran into resistance and opened fire in self defense killing several on board. It’s part of an ongoing push by Turkey to assert its prominence in the region and feeds into a longstanding belief that the Israelis are somehow all-controlling.
There’s no word on how exactly the leak of 250,000+ documents from the US State Department would somehow affect Turkey’s position only that the Israelis somehow benefit from the release and can only hazard that confirmation that the rest of the Middle East privately agrees with Israel’s public pronouncements about Iran’s threat to regional stability is a threat to Turkey.
