Man cured of HIV via stem cell therapy for leukemia
An HIV positive man fighting leukemia was given a therapy of chemo and a stem cell transplant.
Turns out donor of stem cells had a rare gene that makes one immune to HIV.
So this was a cure by accident. Will lead to more research, but few HIV patients will want the chemo/radiation prior to getting the stem cells when drug therapies making living with HIV bearable.
This does show that, despite our mapping of the human genome, we have only a small understanding of all of the permutations or this therapy would have been designed for a clinical trial, seeing as we have been trying to find a cure for 25 years.
