Brazil Struggles To Restore Order After Rain Disaster In Rio
-Brazilian authorities on Friday struggled to cope with the devastation caused by flooding and landslides in mountains north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, as the death toll climbed past 500, and more than 6,000 families were left homeless.
In the historical cities of Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo and Petropolis, which were hardest hit by the torrential rains that started on Tuesday, residents who stayed in their homes sifted through the wreckage, but remained on edge amid press reports of looting. Many had no electricity, drinking water or phone communications.
