Deadly fire had laundry list of code violations
It was minutes before 7 a.m. on December 22nd, 2010, when the Chicago Fire Department arrived to put out the blaze at 1744 East 75th Street. This building was the old Sing Way Laundry, now five years closed and abandoned. The building had long been suspected by neighbors of housing homeless who could not find shelter. Because it was abandoned, the fire department had a team search the ground floor for any vagrants. While they found no homeless, the trusses gave way and the roof fell on top of the firefighters below. Two firefighters, Corey Ankum and Edward Stringer, died from their injuries.
