These people are threatened by the mere suggestion that God might not be the deranged petty sectarian monster of their dreams. Fuck them.

Twitterstorm is a great word, though.

This is like arguing about which rules there should be for a role playing fantasy world card game so the major players can all earn extra lives if they complete a prescribed set of tasks "because it's in the rules." And within those rules there are certain things they have to wear, and some have special powers, and some are a higher order, and some characters are bad, and there are consequences under particular circumstances that mean you won't get to the next level, horrible ways to die, etc. etc. ad infinitum.

But when they argue about the little details of their fantasy role playing game, they get all huffy about it because they're sure they're right.

Thing is, they'll never really know the rules. They're just guessing.

I think a person would have to be pretty screwed up to be happy in the Christian heaven while others suffer. Of course the supernatural only exists in man's imagination, but it's still bizarre that people would accept the Christian Heaven/Hell as if either wouldn't be eternal torment.

Rob Bell does good stuff. I'd encourage you to watch some his videos if you can find them. They really make you think.

Form the article:

R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said in a blog post that by suggesting that people who do not embrace Jesus may still be saved, Mr. Bell was at best toying with heresy. He called the promotional video, in which Mr. Bell pointedly asks whether it can be true that Gandhi, a non-Christian, is burning in hell, “the sad equivalent of a theological striptease.”

Mohler is the same guy who has been preaching so hard against Biologos and the acceptance of evolution by Christian teachers.

Religious leaders really don't like it when their orthodoxy is challenged, and we see this continually around the world.
