“…but when was the last time Bavaria was rocked by earthquakes and Tsunamis?”

Exactly. The US is big enough to place nuclear power plants well away from known fault lines and tsunami risk areas. But that will not be nearly good enough for the anti-nuclear hysterics. The instant I heard that the Japanese nuke plants were experiencing difficulties, I knew that any US plans for nuclear power plant development were down the drain for the foreseeable future.

And AGW will continue unabated.

Location isn’t the only concern. Redundant safeguards, design, and staffing all play a big part in the safety of a nuclear plant. Events like what just happened in Japan might tend to make one view their future nuclear plans a little more critically, rather than plow ahead like a bull in a China shop that thinks they have all the answers.

The saddest thing is that the reactors having issues in Japan right now were old school… nothing like the new ones with passive protections engineered in.

It’s worth noting that all the plants having trouble in Japan right now were built before Russia’s ill-fated Chernobyl reactor.

4th generation reactors just can’t melt down in that way. These are 2nd and 3rd generation reactors that are having problems.

Why not link to the Guardian article those quotes are from?: guardian.co.uk

Anyhow, here is more insight into the German debate: spiegel.de

I, for one, am glad that these plants are finally talked about being shut off again. About 20 years ago, under the coalition of Social Democrats and Greens, this process was already brought underway, but when the Conservatives got elected again, they reversed all that and issued new licences.

That German NPPs are not safe at all is easily demonstrated. Look at the table of security defects at plants in this article: spiegel.de

And if you want to learn about the most toxic nuclear waste on Earth, google “AVR reactor”. Also on German soil.

Sorry, I didn’t leave out the link on purpose.

Why do this? It makes no sense, IMO. If the reactors aren’t up to modern specs and safety standards then they should be upgraded.
