Ichiro to donate $1.2 million to earthquake relief efforts
Word got out today that Ichiro, who has yet to comment on last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in his native Japan, has donated 100 million yen to Red Cross relief efforts.
The yen has fluctuated wildly since the disaster — it’s actually gone up in value because of anticipation of massive spending on rebuilding in Japan — but it today is worth in the ballpark of $1.23 million to $1.27 million U.S. dollars.
The Mariners announced this morning that they will match any all Mariners front office employees and fan donations to the Red Cross. They have stated that they will make a guaranteed donation of $100,000 to meet the match requirements.
Nintendo of America Inc., the majority owner of the M’s, is making a contribution of its own. So is parent company Nintendo Co, Ltd. of Kyoto, Japan, which has given the equivalent of roughly $3.7 million U.S. (300,000,000 yen).
