I'm not surprised. I wish I were. Editing out the truth happens with the "tea party" a lot.

They can't edit out the fact that they are flat rock dumb as shit. That shines through like Christ himself

"God Save Me From Your Followers" was never more appropriate than it is right there, right now.

But the most outrageous statement by far came from Mike Huckabee, who expressed his admiration for Barton by saying that he wished that "all Americans would be forced -- forced at gunpoint no less -- to listen to every David Barton message."

If you manage to pull something like that off, Mr. Huckabee, the ridiculous mythology that you believe in would die a thousand times faster than it's dying now. Good luck with that.

By Saturday, when I watched the webcast on the United in Purpose website, that part of Huckabee's speech had been edited out.

Not only are they openly favoring oppressive theocracy to each other, they want to try and memory-hole it for the rest of us.

To bad for them that they don't have a clue how the internet actually works. To bad for us that they will be responsible for shaping government policy regarding the internet.

Perhaps that was not the best choice of words.

Just perhaps.

Holy crap, it used to be I ran off religious peddlers with strong words and lots of gestures. Now we're bringing guns to the party? This is gonna get ugly pretty fast. I'm going to have to start answering the door with bunny slippers and a shotgun just to keep up with the times.

It was just a matter of time before they went all John Wayne with their dreams of theocracy. Part of the Gods Guns, and Guts trilogy that is their jerkoff source material.

Yes, Mike we should listen to David Barton who thinks John Knox & John Calvin are more important to this country than Thomas Jefferson.

I'm sure it was just a "figure of speech". Just like his incredibly Un-Christian statement about people with pre-existing conditions and the racket industry of Insurance.
Keep talking, Huck. We learn so much from you. Your warmth and kindness. Your big heart. Your true you.
Remind me again of the differences between this and the Taliban. Oh, that's right. The Taliban actually shoot you.

I've always found Huckabee's affable TV talk show persona to be disarming... When he's on the Daily Show, he's a charming fellow, and it's hard to reconcile this with what I know about him.

But this -- I have it now. I see it. In the movie about his rise to dictator, Huckabee would be played by Kevin Spacey. It's perfect.

They really don't understand the concept of 'liberty', do they?

Why not? The Texas State Board of Education believes him on that point. =P

Sure they do, as long as everyone realizes that liberty only exists for straight white Christian male landowners, and everyone else is fucked.

Heh, it'd be funny if it weren't so sad.

Figuratively and literally.

Seriously however, can someone tell me why Christians don't adhere to Jewish practice by not keeping a kosher kitchen, mixing linen and wool fibers in clothing, etc., but happily point to biblical law as a foundation for law and life? I understand that there are practical reasons that permitted the spread of Christianity (Men: you want me to cut what off? Women: I'm not going to quit cooking that-my family loves it and its available all year round.) And I've heard some rather contorted rationalization on why Jesus "fulfilled the law" which might explain why you could do some things, there doesn't seem to be consistency about which parts of the law were "fulfilled" and which parts weren't. Apparently the usury prohibition was fulfilled some time after the middle ages. I wonder where that revelation came from...

When David Barton, Mike Huckabee and others start living a biblical life themselves, I'll consider taking them seriously. I'd qualify the statement more, but they won't, so I don't need to worry.

Now just imagine...President Huckabee with a teabagger-fueled Congress and the current far-right Supreme Court.

The stuff of nightmares.

Just when I think these people can't get any crazier they still manage to raise the bar.

This is the kind of language that should provoke a public outrage and possibly a criminal investigation. For an educated person and possible presidential nominee to say this in public just blows my mind.

I mean, am I wrong to be scared of politicians talking this way?

Imagine the primaries next year. The folksy but shrewd Huck can probably maneuver himself into a good position and may even look like a threat. Then an opponent runs a clip of this quote, followed by one of Barton preaching against the minimum wage or making some of his other crazy and sacrilegious pronouncements.
My conclusion: Huck knows he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected. He is in it for the money that flows from those millions of smugly superstitious dogmatists who love this kind of rhetoric because it validates their worldview and excuses their cruelty, ignorance, and materialism.

21 Shiplord Kirel  Thu, Mar 31, 2011 10:09:51am

How long before Barton declares specifically that God is against the GI Bill? Next time he is in this neck of the woods, I might go to his event and ask him that specifically. It would make a great clip.
