I think this is on the side of wishful thinking, but if we get to those numbers, we could see a significant adoption of the technology assuming that charging stations are available and not merely limited to the more than 1,800 500 publicly available currently.
UPDATE:
500 was an incorrect number; that figure represents the number installed by Coloumb. 1,800 is the number of charging stations installed under the ARRA of 2009 (aka the stimulus package). It’s expected there to be 22,000 charging points scattered throughout the U.S. by December 2013.
For comparison, there are more than 115,000 gas stations in the US (and those numbers are declining gradually).
