The comments are all the usual frothing, seething hysterics. They’re so enraged that this woman does not have HIV.

I agree that the proposed blanket ban on circumcision in SF is stupid.

Having said that, and acknowledging the benefits mentioned in the article, I’m nevertheless not in favor of circumcising all male infants.

Before I go on, please note that I’m a middle-of-the-road guy on this subject.

The way I see it, circumcision is a mixed bag. It isn’t all pro and no con. Yes, it obviously can save lives. High risk cases, such as Diane’s late hemophiliac husband, (rest in peace) and high risk populations in Africa, most certainly should have it done. And there are other medical conditions that circumcision can help with, though I have trouble recalling them off-hand.

“So why not everyone,” you ask? “What’s the con? “ Well, there are two:

1 - When the foreskin is removed, lots of nerves go with it. Even if he were to restore his foreskin later, the lost nerves won’t grow back.

2 - Infants are hypersensitive. Even with anesthesia, circumcision is a painful, traumatic experience for infants. If a boy appears to sleep through it, be advised that appearances are deceiving. He is most likely going into shock.

My point is this: If your son doesn’t have a specific medical condition that circumcision can help with, consider not doing it, unless he wants it done. And if you’re hell-bent on doing it anyway, at least wait awhile, until the kid isn’t hypersensitive. This isn’t like vaccination. HIV transmission via sex won’t be an issue before he reaches puberty, anyway.

Oh, I almost forgot: Circumcision doesn’t reduce the risk of HIV transmission as well as using protection. And there are lots of VDs that don’t care about the foreskin one way or the other.

Indigenous Americans Ruled Democratically Long Before the U.S. DidDemocracy: it was older and more widespread than we thought.
