The windowing concept is a 40 year old idea that I think still has application.

But I agree - Apple is pushing hard on the idea of a single surface as being the all that everyone needs. Apple continues to try and simplify the user interface. I suppose that is needed for some, but there is a lowest-common-denominator approach to it all.

I guess I really don't think that the Xerox Interlisp/Smalltalk derived windows and desktop environment has run it's course. While taking over the whole screen on something small like a phone or a pad is appropriate, to a degree, I don't think is a good thing for a primary environment. I usually have a half dozen apps and up to 2 dozen tabs open in my browser at any given time.

I have even less interest in the whole idea of the cloud. I want my data on my hardware at my physical location. Connecting to and working with, as well as sharing my own resources, are what remains the best use of the network. Companies die or decide that you no longer "own" what you bought no matter how much you paid. Nope. No "cloud" for me.

I agree to some extent, but for most types of data, the cloud is going to be the repository of choice in the coming years. I think that for many people, these smaller devices are going to be their only device moving forward and they will need other forms of storage for their data. Apple has already anticipated this and will no longer be requiring new iOS devices to be synced to a computer - iOS 5 will fully support PC-Free wireless device support and activation.
