Peaceful rise, my ass.

Not to worry, those little yellow slant eyed people have congenital issues with depth perception and cannot possibly compete with our pilots!

///Look it is 1939 all over again!

On a more serious note: The fact that we have canceled the F-22 air superiority fighter program in favor of only funding the F-35 "multi-service" jack of all trades and master of none fighter/bomber/harrier/interceptor means that we will loose our superiority in the air over Russian designed and Chinese made fighters in the very near future.

Too bad every plane we try to bring to production takes more than 20 years, has to have the production of parts spread to at least twenty Congressionally important states (and numerous NATO allied suppliers), and only then face serious oversight after tens of billions have already been spent.

The development of weapons systems is now treated by this country as a cash cow to keep thousands of small and large industries alive throughout the United States. Everyone involved in the process knows and acknowledges that tens of billions of dollars are wasted and that the procurement process is purposefully made to stretch on for decades simply to provide more time to suckle at the Federal teat.

Most of these programs never even make it to production, but they have supplied thousands with well paying employment for long enough to draw good retirement benefits and pensions by the time they are canceled.

It is "graft" pure and simple, but no one will say so, because it is graft "paid" (by giving jobs and kickbacks to their cronies) to the congressmen who have to vote on these programs.

re: #2 ausador

But China does have some issues. They are poisoning their land, and growing at too quickly a rate. They cannot keep up this growth rate. In addition, the minorities are restive. Every year for 3-4 years, on minority group has gone into riot mode.

And that doesn't even count the fact that many of their military pieces of hardware are imitations, and poor ones at that.

But we must be vigilant, and begin to change our strategy militarily.

Your mistaking what I said, I was being sarcastic by mouthing the same propaganda they used in 1939 to explain why we did not have to worry about the Japanese, wrong!

I do agree that we need to worry about China, at least enough to keep a serious eye on their military anyway. Not that I actually think they have any serious plans to "expand their territory" in the very near future. As you already mentioned they need to deal with the changes at home and consolidate their power before looking outward too seriously.

How cute.
But a minor inconvenience to a Navy Carrier Battle Group.

I am reminded of the description I once read of the Battlecruiser Kirov by a submariner: "A Navy Cross waiting to happen". I'd say this is the same. We should keep legitimate threats in mind, but this is hardly one of them.

I think it may not get that far. While I do think they are a threat, there's a reasonable chance (I think) that they collapse before that. Anyone here hear of the Xilinhot Riots recently? All the minorities are being restive. The Han mistreatment of these groups will promote a massive backlash. You can imagine how much I will care about the backlash.
