More than 43 million worldwide forced from their homes, UN says
What will be the outcome? During this new century diaspora the bilious tea partiers in the US are wringing their hands about how terrible things are here, but bottom line we still have it great.
Will we create new semi permanent refugee camps around the world that become the hellish ghettos and problem cities of mid century? I sincerely hope not, since we have learned this last century that tribal homelands and permanent tribal refugee camps create terror.
The number of people forced from their homes worldwide has risen to 43.7 million, the highest level in 15 years, according to a United Nations refugee agency report released Monday.
That’s up from 43.3 million people a year earlier, said UNHCR’s 2010 Global Trends report, which was released to coincide with World Refugee Day.
Of those displaced, the report classified 15.4 million people as refugees forced to flee their country and 27.5 million as displaced persons within their own country, forced to leave their home because of conflict or natural disaster, the report said.
The release of the annual report comes amid increasing reports of people fleeing conflict in Syria, the Sudan and Libya.
