Anti-Abortion Leader: Contraception a ‘Red Herring’ in Reducing Abortions

The Colorado Independent’s Sofia Resnick points to this recent interview with Americans United for Life President Charmain Yoest, in which Yoest is challenged on why her organization — which drafts model legislation banning abortion for the states — does not promote access to safe contraception. Yoest first dismisses the question by saying that there are “differences of opinion” about expanding access to birth control, but then claims that the issue is a “red herring”:

Well, yeah. Didn’t you know that people only ever have sex to have children? Sex has no other purpose except procreation. It’s definitely not for fun or anything. =P

I can’t imagine being that repressed. It’s like their bodies and desires scare them so much that they have to make the rest of us miserable.

They aren’t that repressed, they just think the rest of us should be. It’s a case of do as I say, not as I do.

Because increased access to birth control and the morning after pill has nothing at all to do with rates of abortion….yeah, right.

These people should be hammered relentlessly on the contraception issue, because that’s when their real agenda— which has nothing at all to do with caring about women or children— is exposed.
