The truth is that the great majority of professors who teach are religious, and believe in god(s) to one extent or another. Atheists in the Universities who actually teach are a laughably small minority.

Just going from memory, the simple numbers suggest that over 20% call themselves atheist or agnostic and a majority are not "traditional" believers.

Even 20% is not a laughably small minority, and is considerably larger than surveys of the general population that I have seen. In addition I believe the data showed that a majority had no defined religion, even if some did not discount a higher power.

In any case, to fundamentalists the simple description of "not traditional believer" is synonymous with secular progressive, and to traditionalists that is as good as saying atheist. Just ask Bill O'Reilly.

I rate the premise only partially true.

It's clearly there in the survey tables Naso: 9.8 percent. Of that, a large part are researchers who do not teach as you can find out in the survey, and by listening to C0nc0rdance. I consider that a laughably small minority. You are free to characterize it as you wish.

Agnostic is not equal to atheist.

re: #2 Thanos

By memory, 9.8% called themselves atheists and another 13% or so had no belief in god, which one can take as one wishes. As to those who do not teach, it is my understanding that all teach to varying degrees.

Regarding atheist versus agnostic, in my many years of experience by the time a person reaches adulthood (not just 18 or 21) and has not decided to make a public stance on belief, a position of agnostic is just a knee jerk politically correct statement that is likely to result in an admission of atheism if pressed.

If the tables were available in anything other than a video format I would be happy to dissect the numbers with you.

Nevertheless, on of my main points was that anything other than true conformity in all its glory constitutes atheism to the chosen ones, and therefore the finer points of this kind of survey are irrelevant to the fundamentalists.
