Those of us who hail from the saner Northern parts of the state are rooting for this guy! Apart from Orange County, every county that wants to secede is a low-income area and a net drain on the state budget. If they'd just secede, leaving all the major drivers of the economy on our side of the divide (San Jose, San Francisco, LA), our budget crisis would be instantly resolved. I'd be sorry to see UC Riverside and UC San Diego go, but we'd still have Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz, and the medical schools at UCSF -- and we'd be able to fund them, too.

So go for it, Jeff Stone! Just pick up your toys and stomp out of our state.

From my recollection, the same thing is happening in Southern Arizona. The area is poor, but is neglected by the rest of the state (I recall people saying that they don't get as much money from the state as they give in taxes). In addition Tucson (Center of the area) is liberal, while the rest of the state is nutjob.

Of course, the whole impetus was the attempted assassination of Giffords.

The new state, which would theoretically include the counties of Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono

No thank you. I live in one of those counties, and I shall react as Lincoln if it comes to that.

I am having trouble sorting this guy's press out from the multitude of other Jeff Stones out there on the internet -- can you do us a favor and keep an eye on his doings in the local press? He seems like the sort who might wig out with regularity.

I can try, but I haven't heard spit about him on our local news channels, and this is basically the only local paper I read.

Yeah, Jeff Stone's county is nearly 300 miles from my own, so I don't expect to hear much about him locally, but if I do I'll post it.

It's all about the Benjamins...

REGION: Riverside County supervisors cool to idea of calling for secession

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone may have to pursue his dream of creating a new state of South California without the blessing and logistical support of his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors.

Frustrated by the Legislature's passing, and the governor's signing, of a bill that takes millions in state support away from four new Riverside County cities ---- including Menifee and Wildomar ---- Stone on Thursday proposed forming the new state of South California out of 13 counties.

You know what? I say let them go ahead and do it and we'll see how fast a supposed "true conservative" government will crash and burn.

Could turn into to a great cautionary tale for the future.

Whatever happened to the State of Jefferson? That was a proposed state that (would have) included parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon. I watched an episode of How the States Were Made on Hulu (very interesting program I might add) and it said that it was about to go through until two days before the the vote Pearl Harbor occurred.

And by the way I live in Orange County, and believe me the Orange Curtain is real. The belief system of the people here is vastly different than that of Los Angeles; Evangelical Christianity/Conservatism courses strong through the collective veins here.

'Even' California? We have plenty of wingnuts here. They just live inland, and do not make up the popular perception of the state.

I was just about to say...

Especially in that part of SOCA, though it's not the only place in the state packed to the gills with dumb bigots. People have this stereotype all the con action is in Orange County. I guess they've never been anywhere else in southern CA.

The new state, which would theoretically include the counties of Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono, would be home to about 13 million people. Los Angeles is purposefully absent.

All Prop 8 counties, too, with the exception of one (Mono).

Like all secessionist bigots, people like Jeff Stone only pine for secession with fantasied of a two-tiered society against minorities. They hate the Constitution and they hate this country. I say give them a one-way secession ticket to the Caucusus Mountains, they're so in love with being Caucasian.

It comes up now and then, but not very seriously. Since what the original folks really wanted was paved roads to provide access to areas with timber and minerals, and those roads were eventually put in (in part due to the war effort), the original impetus for the State of Jefferson was no longer relevant.

I figure they'd very much love living in Saudi Arabia, the way things are done there, all but for the "Mohamed, not Jesus" thing.
