German taxpayers subsidize “green jobs” in their wind-power industry to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars per worker per year: $250,000 per “green job” would pay for a lot of real jobs, even in the European Union. Last year, it was revealed that the Spanish government paid $800,000 for every “green job” on a solar-panel assembly line.

Why do you still believe this nonsense from dishonest lying asshole wingnuts?

Because it's easy and safe to believe these lies.

Steyn is a lying douchebag. As usual.

Anyone who is unable to see why many people consider Rush Limbaugh a racist is not somebody whose opinion I care about. Ever.

According to Mark Steyn, "Last year, it was revealed that the Spanish government paid $800,000 for every “green job” on a solar-panel assembly line."

Here he has several facts wrong. First, the study he is citing was released in March of 2009 and not "last year". The study is available in PDF form and is titled, "Study of the effects on employment of public aid to renewable energy sources." The specific citation he refers to does not claim that the Spanish government spent "$800,000 for every “green job” on a solar-panel assembly line" but instead states:

[Page 8] The study calculates that since 2000 Spain spent €571,138 to create each “green job”, including subsidies of more than €1 million per wind industry job

and

[Page 35] We can see that the average subsidy per worker added in these three sources of renewable energies is more than half a million Euros (€571,138), ranging from €542,825 per worker added in or by the mini-hydro sector and two-thirds of a million Euros per worker added in or by the photovoltaic sector, to well over €1 million per worker added in or by the wind industry

Do note that this study indicates €571,138 for three sectors and not one specific sector as indicated by Steyn: wind, solar, mini-hydro. Additionally, the exchange rate on 3/2009 was 1.3295 USD for ever Euro. Thus €571,138 is really 759327.971 USD.

So in summary, the figures alone we have three glaring errors by Steyn in that a) the money spent by Spain was for three sectors and not one; b) the study was released in 2009; and most importantly c) the study was for a date range of 2000 to 2009.

This of course does not include the study itself which has been questioned by several sources including Debunking The Spanish Study on The Dire Result of Green Jobs Creation – Updated January 1, 2011 and Fox News pushing questionable Spanish study on green jobs.

More here on this "study".

Case Study: The “Spanish Study” on Green Jobs and Koch Industries

Since the creation of new clean energy jobs is a critical benefit of climate and energy policy, opponents have focused on discrediting ‘green’ jobs. A report appeared on this subject in spring of 2009 called the "Study of the effects on employment of public aid to renewable energy sources" by Gabriel Calzada Alvarez, an economics professor at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid. According to Dr. Alvarez’s study, Spain’s policy commitments to renewable energy development had actually cost Spain jobs — 2.2 jobs lost for each clean energy job created.

The study became a favorite talking point for opponents of clean energy, who seized on the study when it was released in March, coinciding with the House Energy and Commerce Committee discussions on the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES). The study was trumpeted by opposition groups, covered by reporters, and repeated in congressional testimony by US Representatives opposed to clean energy policy and climate mitigation measures.

US Gov't Debunks "Spanish" Study Promoted by Big Oil Bus Tour

Maybe they should start putting this warning label on the side of gasoline pumps: WARNING - THE OIL INDUSTRY LIES TO YOU EVERY CHANCE IT GETS. The latest example: The American public is getting hosed by the oil industry with balderdash from a debunked Spanish study that claims green jobs are bad for the economy.

Many will remember the "Spanish study" that came out this spring, purporting to make the case - using Spain's experience - that creating new green jobs actually hurts overall employment. I've previously blogged on various debunks of this study.

There hasn't been any shortage of analyses exposing the flawed logic and downright unsupportable conclusions, ranging from the Wall Street Journal's skeptical response to officials with the Spanish government.

Now, the federal government's very own US National Renewable Energy Laboratory has weighed in, with a white paper that finds - exactly as other reviews have - that the Spanish study used a questionable methodology, lacks transparency and supporting data, and ignored several pieces of key information. But, in NREL's own words:

"The recent report from King Juan Carlos University deviates from the traditional research methodologies used to estimate jobs impacts. In addition, it lacks transparency and supporting statistics, and fails to compare RE technologies with comparable energy industry metrics. It also fails to account for important issues such as the role of government in emerging markets, the success of RE exports in Spain, and the fact that induced economic impacts can be attributed to RE deployment. Finally, differences in policy are significant enough that the results of analysis conducted in the Spanish context are not likely to be indicative of workforce impacts in the United States or other countries."

Of course the lies about European green jobs was just one of many easily debunked lies packed into the his article. It's all bullshit.

Yeah. Saw your comment first and thought I'd focus on that. Time limitations and all that you know. I'm sure we could come up with a mile long debunking of Steyn's latest drivel.
