Dish Network and Blockbuster to take on Netflix?
Video store chain Blockbuster may be down, but it’s not out. On Friday the company is expected to announce a new video streaming service with satellite TV provider Dish Network that could eventually take on Netflix.
Dish, which sent the invitation for the press conference, didn’t offer much detail, except to say that it will unveil “the most comprehensive home entertainment package ever.” But considering that the 10 a.m. PT press conference in San Francisco is dubbed “A Stream Come True,” there’s a very good chance the company will introduce a flat-rate streaming service similar to Netflix’s service.
Here’s hoping that what is announced is better than what Netflix is becoming.
The biggest complaint I have about Netflix streaming is the lack of content. While they have a good range of older and eclectic titles, the truly great streaming service will have parity between it’s DVD and streaming libraries for a monthly rather than per-movie fee. Who will be the first to negotiate a good enough deal with the studios to make that happen?
