I was wondering about the trench; it has some extra plastic to help contain the sludge:
Suncor Energy clean-up crews today are pressing ahead digging a trench with 90 feet done and 68 feet enclosed with plastic and gravel and plastic piping — a construction designed to stanch the oozing of a gasoline-like liquid into the creek and South Platte River north of downtown Denver.

Tests of samples taken from the creek and river on Wednesday show benzene concentrations of 1,970 parts per billion at the point where the liquid enters Sand Creek, and 348 ppb at the point where Sand Creek enters the South Platte — still well above the 5 ppb national drinking-water standard.[Link: www.denverpost.com...]
