I used to like Pat as a critic on religion, but he's gone full bull goose anti islam loon, and I will downding the bigot every time he's posted here.

I will too. Too many people couch the desire to "expose the extremities of Islam" in outright bigotry, and unfortunately, Condell has done a swan dive into that cesspool.

3 Achilles Tang  Sun, Jan 1, 2012 4:34:48pm

I don't know what the posts above have to do with what he said. On second thought I do know - nothing at all.

The point being made seems to be, disagree once disagree always. Sounds like T Bagger philosophy to me.

re: #3 Naso Tang

No, it sounds like someone who doesn't like bigots. I don't just disagree with Pat Condell on some things, I consider him a force for evil posing as someone who likes liberty. He likes liberty except when it's liberty to freely practice a person's religion. I don't care to listen to what he says, anymore than I care to listen to what David Duke or Don Black have to say. I will always ding him down, unheard. He's trying to be England's Geert, and he can stuff it.

Sorry, EF, but as per my stated position (the last time you posted Pat) I will ding. Nothing personal.

Well it's shallow of you. Same for Thanos and his whining.

7 The Ghost of a Flea  Sun, Jan 1, 2012 5:56:42pm

I'm not going to down-ding, but I'm unimpressed by the dogwhistling about "liberals who hate their own culture" as opposed to "I have the Bible because it's a part of my culture, not because I believe in it," and "nonChristians should just suck it up and not feel marginalized." Cultural masochism...one of his signoff epithets, btw, is a mainstay of nativist bigots. In fact, I don't need any prior knowledge of Pat Condell to guess he's a nativist bigot, because that cute little speech is like a damn checklist of their talking points.

Furthermore it's the most distasteful kind of whine: the kind that imagines itself bold and irreverent for feeling frustrated with another person's feelings. I have yet to encounter a person that views "political incorrectness" as ennobling where it doesn't turn out that they're actually just goaltending their own privilege...which, of course, is exactly what Condell is doing.

[goes and checks Wikipedia...]

Well I'll be damned, I'm not only totally right, but Mr. Condell lacks the self-awareness to notice the basic contradiction of his little speech and his Park-51 stance.

Oh, and the dreaded bete noir of so-called "political correctness"? It mostly boils down to "good manners" when talking about race and religion, that's all.

"AFA has been a real blessing." He also talks about "obedience". This is who Pat Condell was defending. Pat of course is being a hypocrite here since he's spoken out against Park-51 and "minarets" in Europe.

Yeah, nothing political about this. Sure they slammed down "Freedom From Religion Foundation" in this and I wouldn't have complained about this nativity scene. But the reaction here was orchestrated by the religious right in this instance as you can hear in the video I've provided.

The fact remains that the Establishment Clause prohibits these displays regardless of religion. This issue has been highly politicized by the religious right.

Like I said. Anders Breivik. At this point I don't even have much of an issue with this nativity scene. It's the hypocrisy of Condell that stands out the most.

Also, Nazis were anything but pro-equality. Fascists were anything but pro-diversity. I'm not even against usage of these terms in modern context, I'm not anti-godwin. But this is an intentional misuse of these terms.

You're giving the user too much credit. Nazi and Fascist contextually have no more depth of meaning than you are labelled thus, and are therefore the obvious bad guy .

We keep hearing over again from these folk on the right that this is a Christian nation. What they are saying it that the USA has only one official religion and that's Christianity. We have to of course overlook a big factor in the various sects that make up Christianity. However, we can just see it as one.

Where and when was it decided by our founding fathers or in documents that there is an official religion or a state religion and that being Christianity. The only thing the can point to is either tradition or the majority religion or the Declaration of Independence. However, the DoI only mentions God and not Christianity.

I've seen it before, so I think it's intentional. Continuation of the "liberal fascism" thesis.

I don't think think it even reaches the Jonah Goldberg level of semblance-of-analysis. It's more like Rush Limbaugh and his "Feminazis." It doesn't rise to the level of rhetorical flourish; it's just counting coup.

But then again, I don't know the intellectual world of nativists. Breivik was clearly tapping a vein of vocabulary...cultural marxism, et cetera...suggestive of a pseudointellectual tradition that coins these gems.

People fled the UK in the >15th century because of their state religion and it's explicit and implicit restriction of other religions.

I don't think you listened to this clip, regardless of what you think of others.

Your comment against is precisely what he argues for.

There is a difference between arguing against religious beliefs and arguing against the right to have them.

Don't take this push back badly, dude. I got a rather minor drubbing myself some time back for linking one of Condell's rants before I realized he jumped the shark.

Seriously, Pat is like one or two degrees separated from European neo-fascist groups. He's not worth defending.

P.S. - my LGF nick is 'Eclectic Infidel', where on Earth are you getting 'EF' from?

Slumbering Behemoth: I'm not taking any of this personally. I knew a few lizards would get their thongs in a bunch over this, but honestly, if thought Condell was a fascist or close to being so, I wouldn't post any of his stuff here. I interpret the over-the-top reactions as knee-jerk at best. I mean really, comparing him to Breivik? There's no comparison.
