The question is, who are they trying to confuse and keep off-balance, the Iranian regime or those American voters who question the administration’s commitment to its ally?

Neither. They want to slowly ratchet up the fear of Iranian people, hoping that the revolts that took place elsewhere will also take place in Iran. This is the best strategy. The Iranian government is also doing this by answering back—you can’t stop us. We will develop nuclear weapons, and we’ll use them. They have to keep up the rhetoric. But that rhetoric does not play well to regular Iranians. Oh yeah, regular folks know what to say in public. But their feelings can’t be suppressed.

In terms of military operations, the US and Israel (and the Saudis, probably the Jordanians, Europe) are doing things that look like accidents. A computer virus from no clear source, explosions that seriously damage nuclear bomb facilities—that the Iranians must describe as accidents, sanctions that bite, things like that. There’s a real war on, and it’s been on for over a year. The news media seems to be missing the story. I think Israel and the US are playing this beautifully. They are almost forcing Iran to shut down internet and social media access.

Iran is fully engaged in this war. They are not succeeding in their operations, other than successfully smuggling weapons to Hezbollah and Hamas—but the events in Syria are not breaking Iran’s way. If they lose Syria and Hezbollah, the ruling party is pretty much screwed.

Unfortunately, the Iranian civilians are fodder, according to their leadership. Just like the Syrians. And like the Libyans, the Egyptians, the Syrians, the Tunisians, as soon as the people feel as though they are already dead, then something will happen. This is tyranny’s nature.
