I have a theory. Go back to Ireland’s support for the Nazis. The psychology after that is just covering up the crime. The same psychology applies in many areas of the American South, sad to say. There are still crimes that haven’t been dealt with.

I should elaborate a little more. I believe that there is an ancestral aspect to our consciousness. It forms who we are, whether or not we know our ancestors.

interesting….. much of the South has Celtic roots. But my only exposure to Irish from Ireland* was when working at a company that built network routers. They were great folks who loved life and did not sweat the small things. I know my story does not prove anything, except generalizing is usually a fail.

*caveat. I did have Irish Nuns as teachers as a youth. Great teachers, but not very tolerate of my shenanigans. Corporal punishment was still legal in Calif then. LOL

The mystical side of Bob L?

I would propose that there is a social/environmental element to consciousness that exists outside of what is commonly considered “culture”, or perhaps as a subset thereof. This element is part of an untaught, “lived” pattern of beliefs and behaviour; however, I do not think of it as “ancestral” in the sense that the chain can be broken by disruptions in social and environmental patterns. There is a feedback loop of beliefs, behaviours and attitudes which reinforces itself through such things as folklore and other patterned behaviours. Almost like a cultural “habit” which can be broken, even though with difficulty.

Three factors:

Left-ism and its bedfellow anti-Israel dogma is strong in Ireland.

Memories of pre-Vatican-II Catholicism are strong in Ireland.

The mere word “occupation” is a deal-closer in Ireland (a win for Arab PR).

re: #6 Phlebas

It’s my best side.

You are talking about Weltanshauung, and I use the German because, as you just found out, there is no word for it in English. It’s a living entity, in the fact that it reacts. And I believe that it’s impossible to understand Judaism without having this concept as a clear ‘character’ in our narrative. As much clear as Moses or Abraham.

But this would be a mystical discussion, although a very tangible mysticism that can up and bite one in the arse.

re: #7 RoadWarrior

Arafat helped to train the IRA in ‘techniques’.

If we begin on campus, the Marxists are pretty much dead—Soviet Union and all that. And this is a problem for all of those needing to stand up against capitalism. However, little bits of Marxist dust remained in the spot where they went poof. And this dust pitted—get ready—indigenous, organic culture against the reified, fetished, industrialized world of capitalism, which seeks to devour such organic culture.

If you follow that, then it was very easy for the Arab groups to define themselves as the organic indigenous culture, which is being invaded and resisting the devouring power of capitalism (Israel, Jews).

If you’re a college kid, or a poet (pretty much covers Irish artists), this line plays pretty well. Since they see themselves are resisting the imperialism of the British, who threaten their indigenous, organic culture.

as clear, not ‘as much clear’. Had two linguistic programs opened at the same time. My bad.
