Unfortunately, the most serious damage is done before the kids reach the facilities.

Isn’t that the truth.

And we still aren’t clear on the punishment/rehabilitation issues.

My daughter’s youth jail is much more physically restrictive than an adult general population prison. It has to be that way to protect the kids from each other and, especially, themselves. It was established by a ‘charity’ organization after a young kid didn’t make it through his hold at a regular Alabama sheriff’s jail. After the PCB Florida boot camp death, CNN made the rounds of Southern youth jails. They spent a day at her place and moved on, not heard from again.

I used to work with this population, and…they don’t really have any impulse control. Not only that, but the smallest impulses can escalate very quickly into some very serious and dangerous events. They don’t have a sense of a future because they don’t have the skills that fit into a future. And you can’t really teach them the skills—because they have to be heavily medicated to control the impulses.

Medication and heavy equipment are a dangerous combination. These particular types of medications and any job are a dangerous combination. The meds don’t make them feel better—more like wearing chemical handcuffs. So there is high risk that at some point they will try to go without the meds. And at that point, danger is only a few days away.

Sometimes kids get mixed into this group, kids who have simply made a mistake in judgment. But the big behavioral control methods are not for these kids, and are rarely used. If they are used, it could be another instance of poor judgment or a mistake by the staff that led to escalation.

Few feel good stories are written in this world.
