The bishops should spend more time trying to solve their own internal problems and STFU unless they’re willing to give up their tax exempt status.

Also, if they want to resist laws and edicts that are unjust, they could start by helping the authorities to prosecute child predators instead of just shuffling them off to another parish and paying people off.

You said it better than I could.

Like shuffling pedophiles around and hiding evidence of sex abuse?

In principle I agree with them, well except for the part about people listening to what they say.

Historically religious civil disobedience has had a profoundly positive effect in the country. The current crop of Bbshops seem to be tone deaf and politically maladroit, but in principle they’re right. People who have real and fundamental disagreements with the law should consider not following it. They just shouldn’t whine about it.

As always they are not talking about liberty, but about power.

They want the power to force other people to live by their rules whether said people want to live by them or not.

So sad these men forget that they are just men.

I think you need to think about this statement a little more. One could be forgiven for thinking that you don’t believe in democracy or elections or the court system.

That fact that decide not to follow the law doesn’t mean you get to ignore the consequences of that act. Law is not a set of rules that must be obeyed, but a set of punishments for breaking them. If you can more easily live with that punishment than with following the law, go ahead.

If you feel deeply opposed to giving out birth control medication, then don’t. Just don’t expect to keep your job. If you are deeply opposed to paying taxes which support war, don’t. Just don’t expect to stay out of prison.

I see nothing incompatible with choosing to break the law and living in a democracy, heeding elections or respecting the court system. In general, civil disobedience actually requires a greater respect for the rule of law than blind adherence of it, because you are expecting to have to deal with the consequences of that act.

It isn’t - this Catholic is voting for Obama.

This times a 1000.

Simplistic. The law, in a genuine democracy, is a set of rules designed to ensure a fair, just and peaceful society. The punishment is not for revenge, but to remove or stop those who do not respect a fair, just and peaceful society for others.

If you feel deeply opposed to giving out birth control medication, then don’t. Just don’t expect to keep your job.

In this context, they most certainly do wish to “keep their jobs”, and dictate how others get to keep theirs. This is what can be generalized as a “shadow government”, which is what they want. One set of rules for us and our god, one for you.

In general, civil disobedience actually requires a greater respect for the rule of law than blind adherence of it, because you are expecting to have to deal with the consequences of that act.

Wow! This is getting really silly.
We are not talking of people who want to camp out in parks to make a point, and get thrown in jail for a night or two. We are talking of people who want exemption from the laws and the consequences.

Critics within and outside the church have accused the bishops of pressing the issue to remove President Barack Obama from office. But the bishops wrote, “this ought not to be a partisan issue.”

Yet somehow, the bishops never make any sort of push on issues where official church doctrine opposes Republican policy — torture, the death penalty, immigration, minimum wage…

The Pope personally *begged* President Bush not to invade Iraq, and the Bishops had not one word to say about the the President doing it anyway. I guess contraceptives are just more important.
