The decision by the IRS to publish the names is referred to by lawyers as “name and shame.” That’s because those who renounce are seen as willing to give up their citizenship primarily for financial reasons.

As the ship of state takes on water, the officers and crew blame the fleeing rats.

I wonder where they went? The U.S. is still one of the least intrusive countries to live in.

Somewhere along the line people have gotten the idea that freedom is free.

The tax on income abroad is the single dumbest thing about US citizenship, and it’s another of these things (like single payer health insurance) that everyone else in the world has managed to figure out just fine.

Living abroad (and thus not making use of US services)? Notify the US government, pay local taxes, and then recommence paying when you move back.

But no, the optimal solution is obviously a mammoth set of regulations that lead even professional tax accountants into error.

How does paying taxes abroad equal paying for freedom?

Heh. Love that I get to argue the anti-tax position for once.

Seriously - if you live abroad (as I have) then, come tax time, you basically have to accept a fairly decent risk that you are breaking some regulation somewhere, and will lose 50% of your retirement savings as a result. I’ve been through the process and it is not fun at all. If I thought there was a good chance that I was going to live abroad permanently and just come back to visit people, I would probably renounce too. It’s not as if you’re not paying tax at all, anyway, since obviously you’re paying in the country where you live.
