The linked article describes a demonstration in 1966. At that time Romney would not have been sure whether he would be drafted. It turned out that his lottery number, 300, was too high to be called.

If evidence emerges that Romney asked his influential contacts to intercede should he be called, I will consider him a draft dodger. As matters stand, the term is more plausible wrt G.W. Bush, Cheney, and Bill Clinton than it is wrt Romney.

(I speak from the experience of having dodged the draft myself--by joining up.)

In 1966, attending college put him out of the reach of the draft until the lottery was established. It's about the year I made Spec 5. Dunno what effect his 30 month missionary tour in France had.

About three years before I did.

According to the Wikipedia bio I linked, Romney, like other Mormon missionaries, had a ministerial deferment.

I'm not claiming Romney was pure as driven snow wrt the draft. I'm only saying that in 1966, when he supported expanding conscription, he could not have been sure he would not get caught up in it. Afaik he deserves the benefit of the doubt unless new evidence emerges.

It doesn't matter as a campaign issue. The nominees who didn't serve overseas have beaten the nominees who did in the last five consecutive elections.

Reducing this to twitterable swiftboat size:

"Couple million kids rotated through Than Son Nhut. Romney rotated through Orly."

Screw him and his protest sign.

It won't have any effect I don't think but I still think it's lame as hell that he did that and didn't even bother enlisting himself. I totally can see Romney doing this because this is just the kind of guy he really is. He thinks he's above self-sacrifice.
