it's unlikely she's paying them nothing. But ok, even if zero, then the cost still is over $4k/month not counting site design and app development.

I think my assumption of minimum wage is too low, but who knows.

I should add that I think it's an impressive site. Malkin deserves kudos for vision and implementation. Someone pointed out to me that part of their content is automated, much like Techmeme (though the links I clicked on were clearly posted by the Editors manually). If they have an aggregator then that also costs money to code and to run.

There is advertising on the site, just like there is here.

This is how internet startups work. First you buildup hits, and then you can add more and more advertising. How do you think HuffPo or Kos worked?
