Someone who injures others out of recklessness and stupidity, as Ms. Tolley did, could greatly benefit from the study of certain parts of the Bible, that is true. But it is also true that it is not the place of the state to administer such lessons. I feel certain this portion of Tolley's sentence will be overturned, but I will also say that if she truly wishes to repent of her misdeed she should read the Book of Job anyways.

Frankly, I find the Book of Job to be one of the most despicable in the bible. I have no idea what sort of useful lesson the judge thinks Tolley will learn from the book in which innocent bystanders are slaughtered and Job tortured because he is pious.

The book of Job is one of my pet examples to argue against the literal "infallible word of God" view of the bible. Since it is incomprehensible to me that a benevolent loving God would MURDER a bunch of people and ruin a man just to test his faith... just a parable subject to interpretation

I do none the less agree reading the bible can hurt nothing and is likely to help as long as it is not done under duress. What if the judge doesn't like her interpretation of Job? does he tack on more time?

Indeed, yet your party no longer adheres to such an acceptance of a separation of church and state. Theocracy (whether called that or not) is the goal of the GOP's now dominant religious wing. Particularly in the part of the country they control--the South.

As for repentance, there are a multitude of ways to reach it. One possibility: just paying your debt to society by peacefully doing your jail time and then living a law abiding life thereafter. Why does YOUR holy book, or anyone else's, have to play a part in the equation? Is there anything more arrogant than proclaiming one's religion "the answer" above all others, i.e., claiming privileged knowledge without any empirical data or tangible evidence.
