Austerity advocates like Romney and Ryan are obsessed with putting the squeeze on public spending, especially broad social welfare and education. Their plans mean that workers get trapped in a low-skill, low-pay circle of disadvantage. The increasingly casualized labor market is reinforcing that pathology, particularly for women.

Beware the Deficitbots!!!

re: #1 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You

I retired from teaching high school in 2009, and now, I'm glad I did. I never saw the assault on public education by the Right coming. The teachers at the school from which I retired are miserable. They are having to deal with more demands that supposedly boost student achievement, and they're dealing with pay cuts due to furloughs. Our state legislature is dominated by republicans and we have a republican governor. Their main goal seems to be the dismantling of public education. They've devised several schemes that funnel money from public education to private and charter schools. They passed a bill that allows citizens to take the money that would go toward public education and place it in a fund to support private schools and colleges. I fear a Romney/Ryan presidency because they would not adequately fund public education, leaving many states short of funds. This would lead to more furloughs for teachers and fewer resources for schools to buy textbooks, upgrade their facilities, and/or invest in much-needed technology. We're already losing ground to schools in other nations in the areas of math, science, and reading. We're also losing ground to other countries in regard to the number of people who graduate from college. This may be the GOP plan for America, but imo, a nation of poorly educated citizens is not an example of that "American Exceptional" that they love to talk about. A nation cannot be exceptional if it is producing high school graduates who can't compete in critical areas with students in other countries.

re: #2 majii

That was a great post. The same things are being passed helter-skelter in GOP led Michigan State legislature.

Here is a disconnect in the GOP approach toward education. On one hand they are forcing austerity and slashing teachers pay and benefits and pushing anti-science nonsense into the curriculum and promoting home schooling and doing all they can do to undermine the public education system. They are against programs that provide college students with educational loans.

But then after all that, at Mitt's election website he vows to open up the USA immigration policy to import more scientists and engineers who were educated both here and overseas to move here permanently to help fill our knowledge gap. Romney: Human Capital

Attracting the Best and the Brightest

To ensure that America continues to lead the world in innovation and economic dynamism, a Romney administration would press for an immigration policy designed to maximize America’s economic potential. The United States needs to attract and retain job creators from wherever they come. Foreign-born residents with advanced degrees start companies, create jobs, and drive innovation at an especially high rate.

But nowhere in Mitt's website does it offer up any strategy to increase the number of American students who pursue and earn technical degrees.

Mitt's knee-jerk reaction to every major problem Outsource it.
