...a complicated political decision...

Seriously? I guess pissing them off, as our troops, who they have been killing are leaving makes it so hard to call them terrorists...for fear of what? They will try to kill our troops?

re: #1 Curt

The issue really isn't whether or not Haqqani are terrorists- the issue as I see it is one of labeling yet another group in Pakistan as terrorists.

The Pakistanis can't be happy about their country being labeled as ground zero for terror in the region.

According to a number of sources, terrorist groups have been a part of Pakistan's international strategy. Examples include the Kashmir insurgency and 2008 Mumbai attack. According to Ahmed Rashid's "Descent into Chaos", the Pakistani intelligence agency 'ISI', deliberately reconstituted, re-organized and re-armed the Taliban and associated groups, such as the Haqqani network, in 2001-2002 as part of a deliberate strategy to destabilize American efforts in Afghanistan. (Actually, his claims go further than that.) And there are the ongoing questions as to why Bin Ladin was in a safe house in a significant Pakistani military city.

In politics, you don't necessarily have to tell everyone the truth all the time. Sometimes it's better if you don't.

Pakistan knows they've got terrorists--they're dealing with the consequences, or not dealing, as the case may be. It's a cost-benefit analysis, I suppose, and I don't know enough about Pakistan to come down on one side or another.

I know that if we don't put an "Official Terror Org" sticker on them, the wingnuts will flip out, but that's nothing new.

IMHO that has become the larger issue. Since it's "acceptable" to (let's not mince words) lie to get you way, here we are in the next American Silly Season, where, by my reading scan, Romney, Ryan, Obama and Biden are now all liars...and we will hear this endlessly through, my prediction, late Jan 2013 and toned down a bit into the rest of the year.

Maybe if truth were really a standard, much of what goes on wouldn't necessarily be liked, but at least it wouldn't lead to huge. MSM wide heated accusations.

Sometimes it's best to tell your "friends" the truth...like the popular interventions we see depicted and hear about and maybe have particpated in one or more, because those involved want a better outcome, despite a path through struggle to get there.
