the thing to remember here is that Boeing is no longer headquartered out of Washington State, it's now headquartered in Chicago. And while Illinois allows civil unions, the relevant law may not require the distribution of survivor's benefits. Said provisions may well end up in court.

See the article at the link, Boeing is quoting ERISA at least to the Union reps.

D_F, justifying bigotry as usual. Just because it's not required doesn't mean it's prohibited either, if Boeing wants to behave like an ethical company it will cover the benefits.

This is not a matter of being allowed to give this benefits, this is a matter of not wanting to give these benefits... Surely DOMA is not in the way of a company treating its employees in an equal way, this has nothing to do with that.

I really don't understand why companies behave like assholes, this is just going to create a lot of talk on the workfloor, 5% of the employees that are definitely going to be pissed off, plus a reasonable % of the straight employees. That, on top of a ton of negative publicity.

Google, Microsoft, Nike, Starbucks and a couple of others DO understand how this stuff works, and have been vocal about their support for SSM.
