I've always found these 'photo ops" an enormous waste of effort, time and resources

The President meets with the (fill in the dignitary du jour). i could care less what either is wearing, what type of gesture was made (hug, handshake, bow)

What I care about is did their meeting produce anything positive.

I look at this and wish I could go and take my shot at getting great images. Not my style or career but what a job to have!

Glamour (and a whiff of fame) at the top I would imagine, but underneath it must be tough. Limited opportunities, staged (as opposed to candid) work. Being scrutinized the entire time by the secret service

These guys pursue great photo ops for two main reasons:
(1) It's a big challenge, and therefore fun for them.
(2) It's how they make a living, either as freelancers or as contracted employees of a media outlet.

Print news agencies want images to accompany long streams of grayspace (words) for graphic appeal. They're competing against video, after all. So, some of the images are boring -- president shakes hands with Minister X of Country Y -- but sometimes something more interesting pops up.

I dabbled in it, long ago. It ain't an easy job. Don't diss it.
