Outlawing Halacha in *FLORIDA!?!?!* FLORIDA??

Er, uh… is there some reason why either of those “laws” would have any form of legal standing in the US in the first place, or is this just more anti-Muslim posturing from the stupid racists wing of the GOP?

To be honest, I have never been a fan of allowing any sort of religious family law to have any standing under our common law tradition.

This is good news considering the strikingly similarity between Biblical law and Sharia Law.

I’m in favor of atleast the notion , that Florida State Law not be superceeded by ANY foreign or religious law . That’s not Islamophobic that’s
common sense . If that be the case then NO ROMAN CATHOLIC could be divorced or remarried . Not to mention a Male Jewish spouses ” permission ” to grant a divorce . Florida is no surprise as was a well publicized issue over a females picture on a drivers licenses and subsequently unveiling during traffic stops . Jews Catholics and Muslims and anyone else for that matter are free to practice , adhere to , or not adhere to religious law as long as a state law has not been broken , and any subsequent religious measure dealing with any unaccepted or accepted religious violation does not break any State or Federal law .

I agree, except this is not what these laws are about. If they were, there would be no desire for them. We already have the establishment clause that basically mandates that the government be neutral on purely religious grounds. Prior to this, people passed laws specifically targeting sharia, but when it was ruled unconstitutional they started trying stuff like this instead. Its unnecessary and really all motivated by an irrational fear that the less than one percent of Americas’ population that are Muslims are all extremists and they’re going to somehow take over and somehow establish an Islamic theocracy.

Also come to think of it, ironically and quite hypocritically many of the people who support these laws are part of the American religious right and would have no issue with, in many cases even support forcing a particular version of Christianity down our throats, most likely their interpretation of the faith.
