I think this helps balance the books so to speak. Now if Carnival is being run badly that must be fixed. But this precedent worries me. It could make a captain slower to ask for help if his boss will be billed for big money.

The cruise line noted that its ships frequently participate in rescues at the Coast Guard’s request, including 11 times in the past year in Florida and Caribbean waters. It did not make direct reference to repaying any money.

Good point. It would probably make more sense to try to prevent these problems in the first place.

IMO we need a new international maritime treaty to give each signatory nation the power to not only inspect but also enforce international regulations upon each others civilian ships at port within each respective jurisdiction. There is no other way to make cruise lines act responsibly.

If I were a bitchy United States, I’d call salvage rights to the ship.

Sure, we’ll return them to land, save the people… but the ship is ours now thanks. Maybe we’ll give Carnival a good price selling it back to them.

Only problem with this is that the ship had not been abandoned,
therefore salvage right laws don’t apply.

Though I would suggest that the next time something like this happens, that the U.S. Navy/Coast Guard evacuate the ship via helicopter and/or direct ship to ship transfer and leave the hull floating.

Let Carnival then pay for the cost of towing it back to shore.
