I was just going to do a page on this, but you got to it first. Here’s a few more details/observations.

11+ years after 9/11, and they’re still finding body parts. The medical examiners office just began a new effort to sift debris and found remains this past week that indicated human remains just this past week.

Today, they found part of the landing gear wedged between two buildings not far from my office. In fact, it’s wedged between 51 Park Place and the building at 50 Murray Street.

If 51 Park sounds familiar, it’s because that was one of the buildings that its developers wanted to turn into a mosque and community center. And in an odd turn of events, reports this morning had indicated that the developer had bought another adjacent building on Park with the intention to turn the group of Park Place buildings into condos.

The NYPD is treating it as a crime scene and they’re not going to remove the gear (which still has the Boeing ID #s on it) until they survey the area. There’s also the possibility that additional human remains of victims from 9/11 may be among the debris and aircraft parts that were located since this was found between the two buildings.

I’ve seen at least one report that indicated that they might not be able to remove the part without actually demolishing one of the buildings because of how it is wedged in between the buildings, but I think that’s premature.

God, this nightmare is never going to end.

Especially for those who still haven’t have remains for their loved ones identified. More than half the victims have not been identified through remains. Then, there’s thousands of remains that can’t be positively identified and matched to a victim with current technology because of the extreme conditions of the remains.

But on a more positive note, 1WTC is seeing some significant milestones reached. The 400+ spire/antenna is nearly complete. The last ~100 foot segment is assembled on the ground and will be put in place in the next couple of weeks, bringing the total height to 1,776 feet. At the base, the bottom 20 stories is finally getting its cladding, which means that interior spaces are also being fitted out.

4WTC is also nearly complete. They’ve taken down the sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians along Liberty so you have unobstructed views. The transit hub is still being built (and overbudget and far too costly for what we’re getting), but it’s at least on schedule for its updated completion. And visitors keep streaming into the memorial at a significant clip - it’s one of the most visited national monuments in the nation.

The museum may open later this year, though it had been delayed due to Sandy damage.

That’s exactly what I was thinking about. How many years/decades into the future are human (and other) remains going to keep turning up? It’s so horrible and gut wrenching—and surely 1000x more so for the families.

But on a more positive note, 1WTC is seeing some significant milestones reached….

Thanks for reporting on that. It helps. I’ve only been to the ground zero area maybe half a dozen times since 9/11, and only then because it couldn’t be avoided. I was never able to bring myself to walk up to “the pit” and gaze into it back before they started rebuilding. My son did once when we were down there, but I just… NO… couldn’t do it.

I’ll be so glad when everything is rebuilt, though I still don’t know if I’ll go down there. In my head it still looks like it did back in early 2001, when I used to take the PATH train there every morning & evening going to/from work.

I like to think of the new 1WTC as a giant finger in the face of all terrorists.
