Some Colorado Residents Get Invitations to Join the Ku Klux Klan
SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. - Some people living in a Colorado Springs suburb got invitations this weekend to join the Ku Klux Klan.
Residents in Security-Widefield said they found baggies in their front yards with the invitations inside. The flyers listed a website and a phone number. When a person calls that number, they receive a voice message proclaiming white supremacy.
One resident was concerned about what else might be in the bags. She contacted the FBI and asked that the bags be tested for ricin.
A spokesperson with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said they have contacted the U.S. Postal Inspector who indicated the flyers could be a violation of federal law.
Last year, the Ku Klux Klan said membership in Colorado was booming, but they did not release any membership numbers.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit civil rights organization, 12 white supremacist groups were active in Colorado in 2011.
