A Pennsylvania judge who took bribes from a private prison contractor has been sentenced to 28 years.
Good.
This is why things like prisons, schools, law enforcement and education should be kept public. When profit is involved there’s too much temptation to play the system.

But after a federal investigation, it was discovered that Ciavarella and his colleague, Judge Michael Conahan, received more than $2.6 million from privately run youth centers owned by PA Child Care. In 2011, Ciavarella was convicted of racketeering and sentenced to 28 years in prison. He was also forced to pay $1 million in restitution.
Conahan was ordered to pay $874,000 in restitution in 2011.
Looks like they came out $700K ahead on this. I hope the restitution depleted all their assets.

It’s about damn time someone went to jail for the abuses in our for profit juvenile and adult confinement facilities, and PA is a good place to start. I must say that the SPLC and the ACLU are doing a pretty good job of investigating and prosecuting owners of, and officials at, these facilities. I’m sick of republicans saying that private confinement facilities save the state and federal government money. They might save a bit of money, but they earn much, much, more. These facilities do not do a good job of policing the inmates/juveniles or providing adequate food/medical care to them because their main goal is to make a profit There’s also a firm connection between some lawmakers, the owners of these facilities, and judges like the one in this case. These tools work together to funnel kids/adults into these privately owned confinement facilities and share the profits or receive kickbacks for their role in doing so.

A lot of people who probably shouldn’t have gone to jail wound up there because of this jackass. He deserves everything he got.
