Dotcom’s principal mission in life is to wind Key up.

re: #1 Mentis Fugit

He’s merely returning the favor.
In DotCom’s case, Key totally showed himself to be the yes-man to whatever American right winger who calls him on the phone and asks something of him.
And cripes is he One Of The Boys. He attacks journalists who reveal inconvenient truths, he treats the NZ people the way republicans and some Dems treat Americans(like children who can’t deal with The Truth), and it doesn’t take much for an honest journalist to show him to be the dishonest puppet he really is.
Key held the formation of a government to ransom on - of all things - his insistence that charter schools be prioritized as policy that will be done. And, surprise surprise, before politics he was an investment banker. Te industry that loves government money and insists on no accountability or performance goals aside from profit. Who cares of the kids are no longer taught to think for themselves? The investors are making money - and that’s what counts!

Fuck John key. He’s turning NZ into a mini America, authoritarian government tendencies and all.
So as much opposition the better.

If any New Zealander gets to launch his own personal political party whose only policy position is to do what benefits his own personal business… let it be Peter Jackson.

“Has he not noticed Assange’s fate in Australian elections?”

Four things going for him.

#1. $$$$$$$$$$ and lots of it.
#2. Not holed up in a embassy to avoid deportation.
#3. Popularity amongst the file sharing crowd. These people want programs and movies they can use/enjoy, not Government secrets that to most are just, meh, what did/do you expect?
#4. U.S. Government is behind his prosecution, therefore he needs our support.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The armed raid on DotCom’s NZ residence, and seizure of his filesharing company, happened in 2012, during the current Democratic administration. Iirc it was coordinated with the US Justice Department.

The chief beneficiaries are American Big Media monopolists who, although they have key Republicans like Orrin Hatch (R-Hollywood) in their pocket, are primarily to the Left & Obama supporters.

Afaic DotCom is a rogue, but a rogue who has hitched himself to a good cause for the moment. Afaic American Big Media are rogues with the size, money, and clout to buy off governments.

The Republicans could should be making hay out of things like the Dotcom raid and the Swartz suicide, but the Stupid Party is cozy in the pocket of Big Business.

I hope you don’t imagine I disagree.

Herr Schmitz has decided to be the world’s biggest gadfly and I wish him luck. Key’s buttons are ridiculously easy to push. My only concern would be that Dotcom’s efforts fragment the opposition.

P.S. I don’t see any sign of Assange/Greenwald style narcissism in Dotcom’s public persona so far. Being a cocky bugger is not the same thing at all.

Fact is, it doesn’t matter what party is in power in America. Compared to NZ, both American parties are right wing when it comes to economics and foreign policy. That’s how far America has become out of step with the rest of the western world.

I don’t imagine that at all - I was merely adding to your commentary, not disagreeing.

The opposition in NZ is doing a pretty good job of fragmenting itself…
