Actually, yes. In an enclosed area like a boarding school or a ship at sea, these things happen. Sometimes even in skyscrapers. I’m not going to stop cruising because of it — life is full of hazards.

We went on a Disney Cruise the first of the year, and they had hand sanitizer out everywhere you went on the ship. As far as I know, no-one got sick.

It’s probably a norovirus, resulting from poor sanitation. People are in a closed environment, and all it takes is one sloppy person (didn’t wash his hands after taking a shit, for example) or contamination of the fresh water, and in fairly short order, many people get ill.

Here’s some statistics from the CDC about norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships.

And a wiki on norovirus. en.wikipedia.org

Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer helps, but you have to trust that the food and water are not contaminated, too.

re: #3 wheat-dogghazi

Went on a cruise once. I got sick with norovirus. It was a most unpleasant experience. Confined to room and got sea-sick to boot (before I got ill, I was fine and didn’t have any kind of seasickness).

How did I get it? I probably touched something that was cross-contaminated - which is real easy to do. Buttons on elevators. A railing on stairs. A table. Chair. Seats.

And that’s with me being vigilant about using the hand sanitzer that was all over the place.

Note too that the outbreak counts only those confirmed cases. There are probably some people who are sick and haven’t reported it.
