Punk with a shield. He should do more time than a regular rapist. HE’S A FUCKING COP. Bad cops do more damage than you know. Why are crimes not reported? Why do bad guys get away? Why won’t people talk? Because they have had prior repeated experiences with bad cops. I would bet money this piece of shit pulled this before and got away with it. Pena’s lawyer should be laughed out of the court room.

1. Here’s a crazy/ idea: all else being equal, government employees should be held to higher standards than ordinary citizens are.

2. Public awareness of abuse of authority by law enforcement is growing more than I would have expected a few years ago.

I agree that policemen guilty of such a crime should face stiffer penalties than a regular citizen, but 75 years doesstill seem like an unusually long sentence for his crime. That said, I hope they look carefully into his past and try to find any other victims. If he has done this repeatedly they should throw away the key.

It is a long sentence. On the other hand, I have zero sympathy for this asshole. His victim got a life sentence of dealing with the trauma he inflicted on her.

No, it’s an appropriate sentence. He will not be allowed to commit this crime again.

He should be made to serve the entire 75 year sentence because he was a public servant whose primary job was protecting the public not using his position to take advantage of any citizen. He chose to violate the public’s trust, so he deserves the sentence. When I think of the terror Ms. Cuomo experienced in the attack, and how her life has changed as a result of it, I can’t help but ask myself if she lives for another 75 years, will she ever forget the attack? I don’t think so. I was the target of a rapist when I was student teaching in Atlanta at the age of 21. The only reason I wasn’t raped was because I ran like hell away from my attacker, my heart filled with terror that he’d catch up to me with my every footfall. I’m 61 now, and I remember the terror I experienced so long ago, so imho, he deserves to serve every year of the 75 year sentence. He couldn’t find it within himself to find one ounce of compassion for Ms. Cuomo, so I understand why NY State Supreme Ct Justice Carruthers had none for Michael Pena. If Pena could dish out terror to Ms. Cuomo, he should be able to deal with the terror of being a former police officer in prison. And, besides, it’s not as if he didn’t know kidnapping her and threatening to shoot her in the head if she resisted as he raped her wasn’t wrong. He knew, but he just didn’t care. He did the deed, should serve the 75 year sentence, and be glad the penalty wasn’t death.
