It’s like trying to use Apple’s Mavericks OS, armed only with an MS-DOS manual. Some things will sort of make sense. Some things will be impossible or nonsensical, and you won’t be able to do much very efficiently.

Anyone who figures out the TouchPad is a witch.

I can go with harsher terms than cult. How about thieves? Hijackers? They stole the reputation of my religion in the name of fundamentalism and a puritan resistance to modernity. The same modernity that grants them the big voice-Internet, mega churches based on TV donations.

Perhaps I am now too old and scarred from previous battles with creationists, but this short essay I think misses some key points.

Religions are built of cults. The cult, from the ancient Latin cultus, means worship. When groups of people “worship” together they form a cult. Though today the English word “cult” has a negative connotation, all religions are built of people who worship (in whatever form) together. There is no thing as a one-person religion, even if some may try to sell the idea when they need to prove they are different than others.

American Fundamentalist creationists are part of a social movement that is cutting across previously at-odds sects. It’s an attempt to escape modernity, and not coincidentally arose in parallel with the facets of modern life, such as the industrial revolution and then the information era.
