Although WIPP is best known as the United States’ only federally operated nuclear waste disposal facility, the northern portion of the salt mine is used for scientific experiments that researchers hope can advance knowledge of physics. Waste is stored in the south side of the underground facility. The experiments, which include the Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber, have been called “critical” to the Department of Energy’s mission by some in the science community.

“It’s a frustrating and difficult time but it’s unavoidable,” said Ned Elkins, a project manager for the Los Alamos National Laboratory Carlsbad office. “Science is so critical to not only WIPP’s mission, but to DOE’s mission (as well). But at this time where we are at, we just can’t and won’t sacrifice safety for a scientific need.”
