11 Die in India as Buildings Collapse
Two buildings more than 1,000 miles apart in India collapsed within hours of each other on Saturday, killing 11 people and trapping dozens of others in the rubble.
In New Delhi, a decrepit four-story building that was illegally constructed decades ago in the northern part of the city collapsed around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. At least 10 people were killed, and 40 survivors were pulled out of the rubble, according to reports on Indian television news channels.
Hours later, a 12-story building under construction in the outskirts of the southern city of Chennai crumpled, trapping dozens of construction workers who remained missing late into the night, according to television news reports. One person was killed, and a dozen workers were rescued, officials said.
