At least the city council ended up doing the right thing.
I don’t understand people whose world view is so limited and whose fear is so great that having a place of worship in their community is terrifying.

I’m not a religious person myself, but a church, a mosque, a synagogue in an appropriately zoned area just isn’t a threat. People are people.

I’d be more impressed if they’d done the right thing because it was the right thing. As far as I can tell, the only one who did the right thing from the get-go was Councilwoman Cris Eaton-Welsh, who stood alone in voting in favor of the permit on 12/01—that couldn’t have been easy.

As for the rest, it seems they only did it grudgingly. As the only other Councilperson, Debra Williams, who commented about the change of votes said, “RLUIPA trumps.”

I guess I can’t be too choosy though… Thank goodness for our Constitution and for RLUIPA which, ironically, was introduced to Congress by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and was passed unanimously by both houses two weeks later.

As for the rest, I agree 100%. ;-)

Why these ignorant fools believe that the presence of Mosque means sharia law is about to be imposed on the local populace beats me.

No wait, it doesn’t. Fox news has been interviewing “leaders” like Michelle Bachmann for years who make dire predictions about the impending rise of sharia law. Their talking heads never question their guests as to how it would even be possible for our entire legal system to be replaced by that of a tiny minority. It’s left there hanging as if it were an actual, looming threat.
