Mali Restaurant Attack First in Capital Since Start of War - Bloomberg Business
Five people were killed in Mali’s capital Friday evening, the first attack in the city since fighting started with rebels and militants tied to al-Qaeda in 2012.
One French person was probably killed in the shooting, French President Francois Hollande said in e-mailed statement. Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita visited La Terrasse restaurant in the Hippodrome neighborhood Saturday morning after police removed unexploded grenades. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
Hollande sent troops to Mali in 2013 to prevent militants linked to al-Qaeda from gaining more territory as they moved south from their base in the north of Mali. The French mission is now focused on preventing militants across the Sahel, the area below the Sahara, from gaining a foothold in the region.
